What to see and what to do in Comacchio

Our advices for a day-trip in “little Venice”

There is a small and charming city near to our camping and reachable in a day-trip from Ferrara and Ravenna: Comacchio, well-known all over the world as “little Venice of Emilia Romagna”.

Let’s discover what to see and what to do in Comacchio, walking in the Old Town and hiking in suggestive lagoon.

Old Town, Trepponti Bridge and the Civic Tower

Comacchio was founded approximately 2000 years ago, by Etruscans and Gauls populations. Later, Comacchio was annexed by Roman Empire and his Emperor Augustus.

More recent history is testified by interesting evidences and must see places, as the Old Town, Trepponti Bridge and the Civic Tower.

Most iconic monument and emblem of the city is Trepponti Bridge, built in 1638 by italian architect Luca Danese and commissioned by Cardinal Giovan Battista Pallotta. This bridge is also known as Pallotta Bridge.

Trepponti Bridge is the primary doorway for the Old Town, that leads in the heart of Comacchio till the ancient Civic Tower.

Also kwown as “Clock Tower”, the Civic Tower was built in 19th century on the ruins of a 14th century tower.

Ancient Delta Museum

Ancient Delta Museum is the Archaeological Museum of Comacchio, founded for spread and enhance the history and the evolution of ancient Po Delta territory.

Hosted in a 18th century building (former hospital called "Ospedale degli Infermi"), Ancient Delta Museum has a large collection of artifacts from the earliest traces of civilizations in this area.

The Museum also shows the centuries-long trasformation of the region and of the human settlements in the ancient Po Delta area.

Ancient Delta Museum is a must-see place in Comacchio, particularly on summer Friday, when a guided tour is held at 9.30 pm. More information about Ancient Delta Museum.

Comacchio Valleys

In our list of what to see and what to do in Comacchio can’t miss the wilder and suggestive part: Comacchio Valleys.

Comacchio Valleys is a large area between Ravenna and Ferrara within Regional Park of the Po Delta.

During a walk in the Park, you can meet a rich flora (oaks, pines, beech trees) and an interesting wildlife (flamingos, storks, egret).

Afterwards, you can enjoy birdwatching or take a picture of old fishing stations made by fishermen with straw.

Comacchio Cuisine

We are in Romagna, we have an old tradition of good food and wine, thus you must take the time for a dinner in a typical Comacchio restaurant.

A typical Comacchio recipe must include the famouse Comacchio eel.

Otherwise, you can choose another fish recipe as Filetti di Sogliola seasoned with white wine or Acciughe in Cartoccio.

After hiking and walking around for all day, you should satisfy your taste and allow yourself a dinner in a lovely and romantic mood.

Riding into the wild

The best way to discover Comacchio wilderness is riding with a bike among Old Town and Valleys.

Once at week, an expert guide leads our guests through suggestive landscapes, crossing Comacchio, Lido di Pomposa and the lagoon.

A 3 hour and 30 kilometres itinerary through pine forest, biking along the coast till Comacchio Old Town and the Valleys.

You don’t have a bike? No problem, we have electric bikes to enjoy the trip without struggle, so you can focus on the landscape and the nature.

What are you waiting for? Come and find out why Comacchio is called “little Venice” of Emilia Romagna.
